Just another day at The Gulag
With about 2 hours to go in the day, my co-worker at The Gulag casually says to me "So, Janet's laid off, huh?"
Janet. My Boss. (Well, my former boss.)
Needless to say I was floored. Not only did they lay off a very nice person that has worked for this company for over a dozen years, but there wasn't even an officially announcement about it or even have someone come over to our group to let us know. The only reason my co-worker heard it was that he overheard it from a couple of people gossiping about it. So I heard it 3rd hand. Nice, huh?
She was there all morning. I noticed she was gone when I came back from lunch but figured she just left early for the day. Her stuff is still in her cubicle. I guess she gonna come back tomorrow to grab it and hopefully say goodbye. She's a good person that did alot for this company and she and others did things to help morale like holiday luncheons and stuff like that.
They have been laying off people in different departments here and there, but I thought I would go long before she or anyone else in my building given my "temp" status.
This is why I hate it there. There doesn't seem to be any long term plan that I can see. I'm supporting mostly old technology. There is one new product that we are supporting, which is probably why I'm not gone yet. The one really great product they developed lately they put on the shelf because they didn't have the money to distribute it and didn't want to partner up with anyone and share the wealth.
Some of these people have been at this company for decades and they are probably gonna be out on the street eventually. I really hope I get this job I interviewed for as I'm sure my days are numbered if this new product doesn't take off.
Am I gonna be next. Who knows?
Do I care? Nope.
I really hope I'm next. I mean it.
