Going GA-GA over GAH
Yesterday I finally got a copy of Greatest American Hero and watched the pilot. A lot of my friends and I have been waiting for this show to come out on DVD for a long time and it was well worth the wait. Although this was one of my all time favorite shows when it was on the air, I didn't know how it was hold up after some 20 years from the last time I saw an episode (The series ran on cable stations years back but I never had those stations on my cable system). I'm glad to say, aside from some cheesiness and some not too great FX shots (but still not bad at all for 1981 TV), that not only does the show hold up after 24 years, but I have forgotten just how well written this show was. And the DVD transfer is incredible - the picture is nice if not nicer than when it was first broadcast and the audio was been enhanced including remixing all the music for stereo. In watching the pilot there were so many things I forgot about the characters like the fact that Ralph has a son, and that not only is he a teacher, but a special education teacher. I cannot wait to get time to dive into the rest of the box set including the retrospect and a unaired spinoff for a series with a girl in the jammies. There has been talk about Disney making a big-screen movie for years but never really went anywhere. With the amazing popularity of this box set (it has sold very well in retail stores and is currently ranked 20th on Amazon not bad for a TV show most people under 21 never even heard of), maybe this new found popularity will get the film finally made as long as it doesn't get turned into an Inspector Gadget-type kid fest. How'd you like THAT scenario, buddy?
