The Monthly Post!!

Ok, I'm not trying to make this a monthly thing...it just looks that way.

I'll try to cover what's been up with me and my reaction to different things that have happened in the last 31 days.....

  • Well the Patriots won again. I can get used to this dynasty thing. It was nice 20 some years ago when The Celtics won or made the finals every year. But I have to admit that the 3rd time has become somewhat anti-climatic with THE RED SOX WINNING THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!! ;-)
  • Speaking of the World Champions, the truck rolled out to Florida last week and pitchers and catchers are due to report tomorrow. April 3rd cannot come soon enough, although I am extremely disappointed that it's starting to look like for the first time in almost 20 years I will not be able to attend an Opening Day game. But I think we'll have a great season as long as the manager can keep out of traffic accidents.
  • UPN did the right thing by canceling Enterprise when they did, allowing the producers to plan a decent send off. Although this has been by far the best season of the series, it was a case of too little, too late. The handwriting was on the wall when the excellent series Battlestar Galactica (So far The best SF TV since Babylon 5 and DS9) beats it in ratings despite the fact that it is only available in half the homes that UPN has access to. It'll be really weird not to have a Star Trek series on TV for the first time in 18 years, but there is enough quality genre television on currently to satisfy me for now. But hopefully someone will take the time and come up with something of quality that will resurrect the Trek franchise and appeal to a younger crowd, something Enterprise and Voyager tried and failed to do.
  • Speaking of quality Sci-Fi, I have finally followed the advise of several friends and watched the short-lived series FireFly. While I liked but not loved most of the 13 produced episodes, what makes me a huge a fan of it are the characters and premises that came out of this series. The fandom around this show is eerily similar to Trek Fandom of the 70s except that with Trek the fandom grew thru TV syndication while Firefly fandom is growing thru ever increasing sales of the DVD set of the entire series (Fox has sold over a million copies so far). And this fandom has already shown it's muscles by convincing Universal to continue the exploits in the upcoming feature film Serentity. With the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises both coming to an end within 2 weeks of each other in May, it would be nice to have a "shiny" new franchise to grab onto.
  • A long time ago there was a TV series called The Greatest American Hero which featured a mild-mannered teacher that ran into some aliens and received from them a suit that gave him special powers. The only thing is that he lost the instruction manual and had to learn what the suit could do by winging it. This was one of my all time favorite shows growing up and now it's finally on DVD. I can't wait to get it...if I can find it. The demand for this first season set was much higher than what was predicted and I gave up after going to 5 different stores that sold out it's supply sooner than they predicted. Hopefully I'll be able to find it this weekend.
